County Seat at Fincastle

Fincastle is the County seat of Botetourt County and is located about seven miles from our home. Fincastle's courthouse was designed by Thomas Jefferson. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Lewis and Clark) departed from Fincastle when they were commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Purchase.

It's Time for UCLA Football...

The UCLA Bruins kick off the 2008 season against Tennessee Volunteers on Monday, September 1st at the Rose Bowl.

One of the things I miss most about moving from California to Central Virginia is UCLA football up close and personal. For 15 years we had season seats at the 30 yard line in the best football stadium in the United States, the Rose Bowl. I do believe my neighbors think us a bit different when we fly our UCLA BRUINS flag proudly and they are flying their Virginia Tech Hokie and University of Virginia Cavalier flags. Needless to say being different does not bother us...

Go Bruins!!!!

Nature's Jewels

I am playing with my new camera...loved this close-up of the leaves after a recent rain shower and how the drops of water beaded up and look like little jewels. If you click on photograph and see enlarged version you can see the reflection of the trees in the drop. Awesome.

Before we headed off for our docent tour of Poplar Forest I spotted this in a nearby tree and snapped a few pictures. Click on it to enlarge and you can see the little worms moving about inside the bag.

A Visit to Thomas Jefferson's Country Retreat

The Road Not Taken

Two roads deverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black,
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh,
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I~
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

After all this kind of fanfare, and even more, I came to a point where I needed solitude and to just stop the machine of 'thinking' and 'enjoying' what they call 'living,' I just wanted to lie in the grass and look at the clouds... -Jack Kerouac, Lonesome Traveler
