Fincastle is the County seat of Botetourt County and is located about seven miles from our home. Fincastle's courthouse was designed by Thomas Jefferson. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (Lewis and Clark) departed from Fincastle when they were commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Purchase.

The courthouse burned in the 1970s and was almost completely rebuilt around the vault, which withstood the fire and kept the records intact during the blaze. Some of the records contain original signatures of people like Jefferson and Washington.
