Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

On my way back from photographing the alpaca shearing at a friend’s farm I finally met the local black buzzards face-to-face. I stopped the car, put the zoom lens on the camera and proceeded to walk towards them. I actually got closer than I thought. They were having a late lunch of a road kill deer.

    Amazing photos! The first one is just so cool! One of my sons adores vultures, ever since we rode Splash Mountain in Disney World when he was 4 yrs old. He even sleeps with a stuffed vulture. I must show him your post tomorrow. :)

    Wow, those photos are wonderful captures. And how lucky is that to know someone who has an alpaca farm? Those little animals have the cutest faces, with no disrespect to our turkey vulture there ;) The turkey vulture is however a very graceful bird in flight.

    Those don't look like turkey vultures (or turkey buzzards as they're called in my neck of the woods). Turkey buzzards have red skin on their heads—like turkeys.

    Those critters look more like black buzzards.

    Turkey buzzards are ugly, but black buzzards are downright sinister. They'll lurk around a cow that is calving so they can eat the afterbirth immediately. The turkey buzzards are a little more polite.
